From the 17th century until the mid-20th century, large-scale peat extraction took place in the Peel region. The Peel Museum shows you how important peat extraction was for the region.

You get a glimpse into the hard life of the Peel workers who always had to work very hard here. Christiaan Hesen (1853-1947) was such a worker and a striking figure. His nickname Rowwen Heze, or Rough Hendrik, became known through the band of the same name from America.

On the museum grounds you will find the ‘Rowwen Heze hut’, ‘the camp hut’, the main museum building and ‘the barn’, with tools from that era. But also an authentic turf hut, a sheep pen and a bee pavilion.
