The Peat Digger - America
In a small green space between Nusseleinstraat and Kabroekstraat in America, Limburg, stands D'n Turfsteker, a monument to all the peat cutters who were so important to the Peel region.
The original statue was made in 1987 by artist and sculptor Piet Hermans (Venray 1945-2007). Because the statue was too sensitive to the weather, it was moved to the Peel Museum. A new statue was placed in its place, this time in bronze and made in 2011 by artist Mieke van Uden (Boekel 1949-2017).
