You are here at a beautiful nature reserve: De Pannenhoef. Not far from here is Rijsbergen. Vincent's childhood friends ‘Aartsen’ lived at 16 Ticheltsestraat. When Vincent was at primary school in Zundert, he regularly came here to play.
The Pannenhoef is a nature reserve of about 706 ha, located between the municipalities of Zundert, Etten-Leur and Rucphen. The area used to be mainly known for peat extraction. Peat was used as fuel by households and beer breweries. The oldest Scots pines are about 200 years old and were thus already there in the time of Van Gogh. The Black Barn was built in 1916. In the little bakery next door lived the overseer and his family. An exhibition on the cultural history and flora and fauna of the Pannenhoef has been set up in the Black Barn.
Vincent was a huge nature lover and regularly walked through this area. He wrote extensively about it in his letters. Listen to the story about Vincent van Gogh and the Pannenhoef at the audio column behind Buitenlokaal De Zwarte Schuur.
