Officially, the Oude Kerkhof is called Begraafplaats Nabij Kapel in ‘t Zand or, in Roermond dialect, Den Aje Kirkhaof. The cemetery was inaugurated in May 1785 and was redesigned and extended by Pierre Cuypers in 1875.
The cemetery contains a large number of special grave monuments and burial chapels. These include the Cuypers family tomb. The architect made a tombstone for his first wife Rosa, who, like his daughter, died of tuberculosis in 1855. His second wife Antoinette died in 1898 and received a memorial column. Pierre Cuypers and his son Joseph Cuypers were also interred there many years ago now.
The cemetery as a whole has been a national monument since 2001. In addition, a dozen or so grave monuments have been granted national monument status individually.
Guided tours of the Old Cemetery are given on fixed days each year. These can be themed tours, such as a WWII tour or a special Cuypers tour. Check the cemetery's website for these.
