In the 18th century, the landscape around Aalsmeer became unsuitable for livestock farming due to peat extraction but ideal for tree cultivation and strawberry farming. Around 1880, strawberry farming reached its peak but was later replaced by the demand for cut flowers, especially roses. In 1912, the Central Aalsmeer Auction Association (C.A.V.) built an auction building on Marktstraat. The site quickly became too small, and in 1926, the auction moved to Van Cleeffkade, while the old building, known as the 'Oude Veiling,' remained in use until 1932.
After 1932, the Oude Veiling gained a new role in the community life of Aalsmeer. Architect J.F. Berghoef designed a new layout inspired by Italian architecture. In 1985, the municipality purchased and renovated the building, losing many original elements. The Oude Veiling, now a municipal monument, remains an important symbol of Aalsmeer's history and prosperity.
