The Koepelkerk in Willemstad is a remarkable structure from the time of the Reformation and is known as the first Protestant church in the Netherlands that was specifically designed for worship. Construction began in 1597 and was completed in 1607, probably based on a design by stonemason and master builder Coenraat Norenburch.
The building has an octagonal layout, in line with Protestant liturgy where the sermon takes centre stage. Inside, the centrally positioned pulpit immediately catches the eye, surrounded by a simple interior and Tuscan wall pilasters.
The church is still in use today and is open daily for quiet reflection, a moment of silence, or lighting a candle. On Saturdays, volunteers are present to share more about the church’s history with visitors. The tower is also open to climb (for a small fee) and often hosts exhibitions.
The opening and supervision are made possible thanks to the efforts of volunteers and local entrepreneurs. This national heritage site remains to this day a place by and for Willemstad.
