There used to be an inn on Harderwijkerweg. One day, an unusual transport stopped here: soldiers arrived with a convicted Harderwijker. On this hot day, they were on their way to Arnhem, where the condemned man was to be hanged. A beer would be just the thing.
The innkeeper took pity on him: the convict looked friendly and she offered him a free beer. She secretly shed a tear. The man saw this and said, 'Do not cry, good woman. I am innocent and I promise you that tomorrow I will come here and have another beer with you.
The soldiers laughed, grabbed the man and drove on to Arnhem. But the next day the man did indeed come for a beer at the inn. How was that possible? The rope on which he was to be hung was broken. According to the spectators, it meant that he was innocent. So he was set free and could keep his promise...
