Although Bartlehiem does not have city rights and is not even an official village, this hamlet is world-famous thanks to the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour) and its iconic wooden bridge.
The bridge is situated at the crossroads where the Dokkumer Ee splits, and ice skaters pass this spot twice during the tour. The "Eleven Cities Bridge" is therefore a perfect location to watch the event. This became especially evident during the 1997 edition, when the ice around the bridge was packed with celebrating spectators, brass bands, and television crews. Thanks to these unique events, Bartlehiem has become a true pilgrimage site for fans of ice skating.
