The Duursche Waarden - Olst

The Duursche Waarden form a nature reserve located in the floodplains of the IJssel, in the province of Overijssel. This area was created by the construction of side channels in the river IJssel, creating a dynamic landscape with various water levels.

The flora of the Duursche Waarden is very diverse, including marsh crabgrass, yellowheart and the rare bitter cress. The area is also home to many species of birds, including the great egret and the kingfisher. On the banks of the river IJssel, you will find a bird hide to admire these many species. The beaver feels at home here and has taken up residence, and you might suddenly come face to face with a Scottish Highlander or an Icelandic horse.

The landscape is characterised by open grasslands, reed beds, marshes, woods and thickets. From the watchtower near the old brickworks, you can admire this beautiful landscape from above. Several walking and cycling routes have been marked out, making the area easily accessible for recreationists. The area offers beautiful views over the river IJssel and is an oasis of tranquillity.
