A narrow strip of land between the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde estuaries is naturally prone to flooding. Before the construction of the delta works, storm surges occurred regularly, causing entire villages to disappear into the Oosterschelde or Westerschelde. The lost village of Reimerwaal is one of the most famous lost villages in the Scheldt Delta. But it is certainly not the only one. In total, some 200 villages in Zeeland have disappeared under water.
The village of Nieuwlande once stood on this spot, about half a kilometre from the dike. The village disappeared into the waves of the Oosterschelde during the Sint-Felix flood of 1530 and the Allerheiligen flood of 1532. Debris and foundations still rise to the surface at low tide. Take a look through the peephole of the information board.
