In the second half of the nineteenth century, the art and architecture sector was growing in Roermond. Stained-glass specialist Frans Nicolas and architect Pierre Cuypers became the city's main employers and there was more demand for well-trained workers in the arts and crafts. In 1852, the Teekenschool for useful and visual arts was founded in close cooperation with Cuypers. The architect taught at this institute for many years and into old age.
In 1905, Pierre Cuypers and his son Jos designed this impressive building on Godsweerdersingel and in 1908 it was put into use as the new Teekenschool voor nuttige en beeldende kunsten. Originally, the Crafts School was also part of the pentagonal building, but that part was removed during a renovation in 1994.
The, now listed, building was to serve as inspiration for the students. Many kinds of decorations, building components and techniques from the inexhaustible source of experience of father and son Cuypers, were used here. In the imposing and colourfully decorated staircase, full of arches and pillars, stands the bust of the old architect crafted by his grandson Michel Cuypers.
The Teekenschool has had a different use for years. You can visit the Teekenschool accompanied by a guide, which can be booked Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:00 at the tourist office.
