In Hoogeveen, a canal was dug in 1632 or 1633 where Hoofdstraat is now. This canal had everything to do with economic interests. In this period, many products and goods were transported by water. 300 years later, the water was considered an obstacle and a nuisance and the canal was filled in. In 1995, in memory of earlier times, the artist Karin Daan was commissioned to make The Cascade at the same spot; the longest water artwork in Europe.
