In 1642, carpenter Jacob Pouwelszoon van Dijck bought a residential house with a slate roof in De Lier. The 1425 property was known as one of the most expensive houses in the area because of its roof, which was not covered in straw but in slate. Jacob converted the property into a residential house with carpentry shop.
Until the municipality of De Lier bought the property in 1996, it has continuously been a carpentry workshop. The beautiful historic building, which is now a museum, was named a national monument in 1997.
At the museum, you can see the old workshop with all the tools that have been preserved. Carpentry tools as well as miller's tools. Because one of the carpenters was also found to have maintained about eight mills. The attic of the museum hosts changing exhibitions. To find out what other activities are organised at De Timmerwerf, check out the museum's website.
