The Cantine or Hotel St. Joseph was once established as accommodation for single workers who worked at the zinc factory in the area between Budel and Weert. Besides the accommodation, or hotel, various facilities were available, such as a shop, recreation room, laundry and a café.
When the zinc factory was built in 1892, the village you cycle through today was also created: Budel-Dorplein. This village was founded with the intention of being as self-sufficient as possible and providing shelter for the factory's workers. So the beautiful historic building you see here is a valuable reminder of those days.
