Close to the river Vecht lies the hamlet of Arriën. Its striking name is possibly related to the word Erriën, meaning plough in Middle Dutch. People have lived in this place for centuries. In the community's Markeboek from the 16th century, for instance, fourteen yards are already mentioned.
The calf is a work of art by Eric Schutte. It depicts the togetherness of a hamlet and symbolises new life. The animal is made of old iron collected by the residents of Arriën themselves. The material refers to iron ore found in the soil of the Vecht valley. If you take a closer look at the calf, you will see that some residents of the hamlet have handed in distinctive parts. The calf looks to the east, to the rising sun, a new day!
