The Blokhuispoort looks like a castle, but nothing could be further from the truth. Until 2007, this imposing building served as Leeuwarden's prison. Now it no longer keeps prisoners, but there is plenty of activity in the Blokhuispoort.
The building is used by various companies and organisations as offices, there is a restaurant with a courtyard terrace in summer and various events are organised. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can drop by for a guided tour with a former prison guard. The guard will take you into the old cells and can tell you all about how things used to be here.
