t Huys Dever in Lisse is a 14th-century donjon (tower). Around 1580 and between 1630-1634, parts were added, creating a country house. This structure was inhabited until approximately 1750. Abandonment led to the collapse of the first extension in 1848. Within ten years, the 16th- and 17th-century additions disappeared, leaving the keep vacant. The roof of the keep collapsed in 1862, after which the interior largely followed. After its restoration in 1973-1978, it was opened to the public. This building is special because donjons of this kind have scarcely survived in the Netherlands as a result of destruction, fire and major reconstruction, among other things.
