A guided tour of the castle gives you a fascinating picture of Jonkheer Henri van Sypesteyn (1857-1937) and his dream. But also about the creation of this castle and the collections of Sypesteyn Castle-Museum. In addition, the estate with its garden and park invites you to take a lovely walk, after which you can enjoy a drink and/or something to eat on the terrace or in the castle.
The French destroyed the original castle in 1673. The ruins remained in the family until 1804, after which Henri van Sypesteyn bought it back around 1900. As the last descendant of his family, he designed Sypesteyn Castle himself in a deliberately chosen, historicising style. For the reconstruction he used older foundations which he believed to be the place where his ancestral castle would have stood. Later, this turned out to have been a dream.
The nobleman wanted to honour his family with this castle. When it was completed in 1927, he had all the family portraits and other numerous collections transferred from his former home in The Hague. The castle thus became a true family monument. The collection of 18th-century Loosdrecht porcelain is also a treasured item in the current museum.
