Once, 52 windmills kept the Schermer polder (east of Alkmaar) dry. By 1928, their role in draining the polder had come to an end and most of the mills had disappeared. Currently, 11 mills are left. In 1969-1970, this windmill was restored to working order and put into use as a museum windmill.
The Museum Mill is a working water mill; the bottom mill of a so-called "two-aisle". The water from the polder was pumped up about four metres by means of staggered drainage (each mill lifting the water a little higher). The windmill can be climbed up to the top. In the reception room next to the mill, a short introductory film is shown in six languages.
