The Streukelerzijl pumping station is located on Gennerdijk near the hamlet of Streukel. It was built in 1925 by the De Noorder Vechtdijken water board. This pumping station ensures that water from the Haerst-Genne polder is drained. Before the pumping station was built, water could only drain into the Zuiderzee at low tide via a sluice.
In 1979, a second pumping station was built next to the pumping station: the Galgenrak pumping station. This helps to drain water from the area around the Dedemsvaart. Both pumping stations ensure that the water is safely pumped to the Zwarte Water and the IJsselmeer.
In the past, pumping stations were powered by diesel engines, but nowadays they are usually electrically powered. The diesel engines are increasingly disappearing. There are plans to renovate both pumping stations. This is necessary to better handle heavy rainfall and drought.
