After peat extraction, this area was left with very many canals, ditches and districts. Cattle breeding emerged and since there were no roads, the milk cans (pullen) were collected from the farmer and taken to the Hoogeveen milk factory in a flat boat.
The Pullevaarder collected milk from all the farmers in the area in this way and returned the empty cans. Every Thursday, the factory paid out the milk money to the farmer. The farmer then went for a drink at the Schippershuus and the wife went to the Thursday market to do some shopping.
