Three bronze statues have been placed in Dinxperlo and Suderwick to commemorate the rich smuggling history in this border area. Created in 1996 by Bocholt artist Jürgen Ebert, these sculptures humorously depict the cat-and-mouse game between smugglers and customs officers (commissaires).
Here you see the smuggler trying to smuggle a rooster. He looks back to see if the commies have noticed him, or is he more busy keeping his contraband under control? The rooster, besides being one of the many valuable contrabands, also refers to the cunning and resourcefulness of smugglers. It is the only one of the four that stands on Dutch territory. The municipality of Dinxperlo had it placed in 2002.
