Jan Wolkers became known to the general public as a writer, but he considered himself primarily a sculptor. He was probably the first artist in the world to design works of art made entirely of glass, including a design for a sculpture commemorating the Watersnoodramp. The glass columns with wings of this sculpture symbolise freedom. According to Jan Wolkers, they reflect the planes of the liberators, but also the doves as a symbol of peace.
