The imposing St Stephen's Church stands proudly in the centre of picturesque Hasselt. This late-Gothic hall church has dominated the cityscape for centuries. After a devastating fire in 1380, the original Romanesque church was rebuilt, reusing parts of the old foundations. In 1466, the largest part of the current church was completed, and at the end of the 15th century, the two choirs were added.
The church has endured a lot over the centuries: from repair work after shelling in 1657 to a lightning strike in 1725 that destroyed the tower and the Hemony carillon. During the reconstruction, the tower was raised and given its characteristic spire. Inside, you will find a beautiful mural of Saint Christopher from the beginning of the 16th century and an impressive organ by Rudolph Knol from 1806, known for its clear sound and craftsmanship.
During the summer months you can take part in guided tours that take you to the vaulted attic, where you will be treated to a unique perspective on the church's structure. For the more adventurous, there is the option of climbing the 177 steps of the tower. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Hasselt and the surrounding countryside.
