When Hardenberg received city rights in 1362, it was also immediately commissioned to build a church. As the name suggests, it was built in honour of Saint Stephen. When many people switched from Catholicism to Protestantism here, as in the rest of the Netherlands, the statues were removed from the church.
Only a few documents of the church have survived from its early years due to fire. The building as you see it today dates back to 1848. The renovated tower contains 2 bells from 1506 and 1531.
