In 1617, the mischievous Michiel de Ruyter climbed the tower of Vlissingen's Sint Jacobskerk. At the time, the tower was under scaffolding due to restoration. But the fact that De Ruyter was not afraid as a young man is forever proven by this action.
In the church you will find the ‘De Ruyter window’, a stained glass window measuring 12.5 by 4 metres. The window is located in the north aisle, next to the tower.
The window was designed by the famous Hague glazier Pieter A.H. Hofman and unveiled on 18 June 1966. The window features several depictions and coats of arms.
Vlissingen's Sint Jacobskerk, where Michiel de Ruyter was baptised and later married, is definitely worth a visit. You can take a free audio tour where you will learn more about the Revolt, the VOC and WIC and, of course, Michiel de Ruyter, among other things.
