Exactly how old the St Anthony Guesthouse is nobody knows anymore. What we do know for sure is that it existed in 1455. The name comes from St Anthony who was born in Egypt around 250 to rich parents. He decided to renounce that and live on as a hermit.

He is popularly known as Anthonius Abbot with the pig, but historians contradict each other as to why that pig is named. What the purpose of the hospice was is also unknown. However, there was a period when you could buy into it to enjoy a carefree old age.

Japik Gysberts, one of the builders of the town hall and father of the great Frisian poet Gysbert Japicx, lived there.
