The Netherlands' most famous philosopher Baruch Spinoza (Amsterdam, 1632-1677) lived with a surgeon in Rijnsburg from 1661 to 1663. Here he was already working on his most famous book, the Ethics, which was published only shortly after his death. To honour him, a rather modest bronze statue of Spinoza on a pedestal now stands on the Vliet/Rapenburg, among parked cars and shoppers passing by. The philosopher with long, curly hair wears a half-length coat and holds his left hand thoughtfully in front of his mouth. The statue was made by Katwijk sculptor Gerard Brouwer (Leiden, 1951-2017).
The then home in Rijnsburg is now Museum Het Spinozahuis and is not far from the statue. Among other things, it houses his reconstructed library with around 160 scientific books, as well as portraits, statues of Spinoza and poems, among other things.
