Haarlem-based artist Sidney Waerts (Lelystad 1976) is self-taught. After a career in the advertising business, he devoted himself to art. The visual artist enjoys working with and for people from different communities. For the organisation Favela Painting, he supervised and designed painting projects in disadvantaged neighbourhoods worldwide.
The work nicknamed SpaceMace (2020) in the Kromme Elleboogsteeg in the centre of Haarlem depicts his own daughter Macy (then 4.5 years old) rocking through the starry sky. Sidney wonders if we are teaching our children enough about healthy balance. ‘The whole world is out of balance and we are shaking up’ he says. In many of his works, especially those in Haarlem, children play a starring role.
