On the night of 14 May 1943, an English Halifax B II bomber crashed near Sleen after being hit by a German night fighter over Emmen. The plane was on its way back from a bombing raid on Bochum. All seven crew members died and were buried in Sleen cemetery. In 1945, school friends erected a monument made from the found debris. After being neglected, it was restored in 1975 and later adopted by primary school ‘De Fontein’. The monument is located in a forest plot between Schoonoord and Sleen.
