So between the densely populated suburbs you suddenly find yourself in the Goois Nature Reserve. In this area, more than 2,800 hectares of vulnerable nature are managed and protected.
In the middle of the nature reserve lies the Blaricummerheide sheep pen. Early in the morning or at the end of the afternoon, the chances are greatest to encounter the flock at the cage. On Sundays between 14:00 and 16:00, nature guides are present to tell you more about the boulders, toads, lambs, birds and insects of the heathland. But also about the special mushrooms and even Scottish Highlanders you may encounter here!
A sheep-shearing festival is held annually on the first Saturday in June. In the 1950s, this was a big folk festival, which people attended in local costume. Nowadays, it is still a pleasant festival with all kinds of stalls and activities, during which, of course, the sheep are removed from their winter coats in the traditional way, using scissors.
