Forestry Sleenerzand is a large and quiet wooded nature reserve with both coniferous and deciduous trees. Here and there are quiet forest lakes, such as swimming lake Kibbelkoele, and open heathland with marshy pools. Shortly after junction 73 (cycling towards junction 33), you cycle along the Schapendijk past a beautiful heathland field with a large fen in the middle. There are several wooden benches here with great views over this beautiful quiet heathland. Good chance you will see some ewes and rams with beautiful horns scurrying around behind the fence. This small group of Drenthe Heath Sheep comes from the Balloo sheep flock and keeps the heather on this particular field nice and compact and young. Drenthe Heath Sheep can cope well with relatively poor soils, so they can survive here just fine.
