In 1946, the Diever theatre society wanted to stage a play in the open air and looked for a suitable place in the area. Not far from Diever, there was a sloping area in the woods that was a perfect place for theatre. Scaffolding planks were laid out for the spectators to sit on and a construction site was set up as a players' room. In 1953, the scaffolding planks were replaced by fixed benches with handrails. The Shakespeare Theatre Diever's stage floor is permanently built in the middle of the theatre. This way, the players play between the visitors, which enhances the contact between player and visitor.
If you have time to interrupt your cycle route for a bit of Shakespeare or a guided tour, be sure to do so in this fantastic and historic open-air theatre. Check the website for current performances.
