Valthe is an ancient sand village or brink village on the Hondsrug in Drenthe. The place name already appears in a document from 1217. There are several well-preserved Saxon farms with thatched roofs, some of which have monumental status.
This original Hallenhuis farm on the corner of Schaapskuilweg and Hoofdstraat was built around 1780 and has an attached sheepfold. This type of farm, which was also widely built in Germany, is often an elongated building with the barn in the middle and the stables on the sides.
This property in Valthe has a thatched gable roof and the attached sheepfold of brick and wood has a thatched hipped roof. Farms in sandy villages used to be built around the central ash and the roofs were covered with straw.
