At several places Along the Katwijk Boulevard you will see accessible sculptures by different artists right next to the cycle path, including:
Pootjebaden, North Boulevard
An older couple pull up skirt and trouser legs and carefully walk through shallow sea water. This 1996 bronze sculpture by artist Goke Leverland (Nijmegen, 1942) was originally supposed to stand on the beach, but that caused too many technical problems. Therefore, it now stands safely in the dune sand.
Earth & Water, North Boulevard
A more or less abstract sculpture depicting earth and water, in which you can recognise a woman and a large fish. You could see Gaia, or mother earth, rising from the sea in it. The sculpture was created back in 1972 by sculptor and painter Nic Jonk (Schermerhorn, 1928-1994) and unveiled by Queen Beatrix in 1983.
Netting repairer, Boulevard, above car park exit
A hooded woman sitting wide-legged on the ground repairs a net. This highly recognisable bronze statue by sculptor Gosse Dam (Buitenpost, 1950) has stood on the Boulevard since 2005. In the fishing village of Katwijk, net mending was mainly done by women.
Michaja Romana (Woman in deckchair), Southern Boulevard
Michaja Romana is a sculpture group: next to the bronze woman in deck chair is a second inviting lazy beach chair made of patinated brass. A sister statue by painter-sculptor Guido Metsers (Hulst, 1940) stands in Middelburg. In Katwijk, this version has been 'lying' on the Boulevard since 2005.
Freedom Forward Monument Engelandvaarders, Zuidelijke Boulevard
During the Second World War, at least 33 people tried to reach England from the Katwijk beach, often simply in a two-person canoe. This bronze statue by painter and sculptor Jurriaan van Hall (Heerlen, 1962) is a monument to those brave Engelandvaarders. The statue depicting two young men rushing from the sand trying to row away with powerful strokes was installed in 2017.
