The artwork ‘The Lovers’ (2007) by Atelier van Lieshout stands along the Reedijk in Heinenoord and greets everyone entering the Hoeksche Waard via the N217. The sculptures show a father with a child on one floating platform and a mother with briefcase on another. They are made of polyurethane, fibreglass-reinforced polyester, stainless steel and concrete.
The sculptures float freely in the water, held by chains at the bottom. This allows them to move without touching each other. These artworks are an ode to the modern family: man, woman and child, depicted as abstract icons.
The images float around each other, sometimes coming closer unexpectedly, without actually coming together. This symbolises the dynamics of modern family life.
