N 51.507738560518 / E 5.4884869275341

The ‘Screaming Eagles Monument’ is located in Son. It is a stainless steel column with a mosaic of the emblem of the 101st Airborne Division, also known as the ‘Screaming Eagles’. This emblem shows an eagle's head and the American flag. The monument is approximately 2 metres high and was designed by Wim Stas. It was unveiled on 4 May 1962 in memory of the allied soldiers from this division who were killed during the liberation.

During the first three days of Operation Market Garden, Son was the command post of the 101st Airborne Division. The nearby sanatorium ‘Zonhove’ served as an emergency hospital where approximately 2,600 wounded allied soldiers were treated. The monument commemorates these events and honours the sacrifices that were made for our freedom.
