In the Drenthe village of Schoonoord, there is a striking and artfully designed bridge over the Oranjekanaal. This bridge was designed by Frisian visual artist Ids Willemsma from Easterwierrum. The design symbolises the historical significance of the canal and its surroundings.
When you look up at the bridge, you see two outlines of a boat. The upper shape represents the underside of a peat pram, a type of ship used to transport peat. The lower shape represents the shadow of this sailing pram. The angled uprights of the bridge symbolise the cross-section of the Oranjekanaal at this specific location, where the canal was dug right through the former Sleener Dune.
The artistic bridge is a tribute to the history of Schoonoord and the Oranje Canal.
