A few enthusiastic Terneuzen residents came up with the idea of setting up a little museum of old school materials. With a small collection, they opened the School Museum School Time in the summer of 1997. Thanks to donations and purchases of more items, the collection grew over the years into a full-fledged museum. In 2012, the museum moved to its current, beautiful National Monument building.
As soon as you cross the threshold, you take a step back in time. You see old textbooks, authentic school desks, reading boards, letter boxes and wall charts from various subjects such as geography and history. The inkwells, pencils and slates show how people used to write down their school assignments.
Also special are the smallpox notes (from 1870), certificates from 1878 and a real school cash book from 1858. Toys, such as spinning tops, marbles and clappers, are also on display and give a glimpse of how children kept themselves busy in the schoolyard.
