Schijfse Vaartkant - Rucphen
Between Oudenbosch and Schijf, via Rucphen was a peat canal. Barges were pulled by people who walked on the so-called canal side for this purpose. Today, this almost dead straight canal side has been turned into a road between Rucphen and Schijf.
Digging peat canals and extracting peat required many workers. These workers lived near the peat so villages like Rucphen were formed or grew.
The peat pole, which you will find along this road, includes an illustration of what pulling a barge used to be like.
