In a former poorhouse from 1843, right in the middle of the Frisian village of Noardburgum, you’ll find the Scherjon family’s clog workshop. The family has been making clogs since 1850, and since 1960 they've been doing so at this very spot. Today, the sixth generation runs the business: Jilles and Hannes Scherjon. Their workshop is all about tradition, craftsmanship and technique – making clogs here is still a true trade, passed down from generation to generation.
Friesland has a long-standing clog tradition. The Fryske learkeklompen, with their leather instep strap, are especially iconic. At Scherjon’s, you can see how these clogs are made and hand-painted. The distinctive finish is applied using a special painting technique that protects the clog and gives it its own character. Through a viewing window in the museum, you can see the entire production process up close.
The clog museum itself gives a surprisingly broad picture of clogs from around the world. And now and then, you’ll spot unexpected collaborations – with designers like Viktor & Rolf, or artists who give the clog an entirely new stage.
In the shop, clogs are for sale in all shapes and sizes. And there’s plenty for kids too: a scavenger hunt, painting your own clogs, or playing a round of mini golf in the garden – naturally, wearing clogs.
