This 525-hectare area used to be home to vast heathlands, where farmers grazed their sheep. Over time, more and more bare patches appeared. This gave the wind free rein and the sand was blown around in dunes. This created a hilly area, just as the landscape still slopes today.
In the 19th century, a forest was planted here to counteract the sand blowing around. Since then, many trees have been cut down again to create an open area where sandy landscape is restored and the heath has a chance to grow again. The Dutch land goat grazes happily here.
