One of the best preserved monuments of Zwolle is the Sassenpoort, a former city gate built in 1406, in the heyday of the Hanseatic League. The large size of this city gate stood for the wealth of Zwolle in that period. It is built from 101,000 stones, mainly trachyte, tuff and Bentheimer sandstone. Meister Henric van Roden and his servants' completed the construction in 1409.
The tower has served as a city gate, prison, state and municipal archives and is now a popular location for wedding couples. In 1893, Zwolle donated the tower to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
