Garderen is home to the annual Sand Sculpture Festival, from mid-April until the end of October. Each year has a different theme. In 2016, it was the world of Rien Poortvliet. Rien Poortvliet saw himself as a drawing storyteller. For the most part, his drawings tell the story, at most in combination with a small title or caption. And. there is always something to discover or enjoy, something to be amazed or astonished about.
The general public loved and still love Poortvliet's drawings, which reflect his love of nature. Poortvliet very aptly depicts a roe deer, a wild boar or a fox in action. Poortvliet was also able to convey the special atmosphere of the countryside of yesteryear like no other on canvas.
And then there were the gnomes! Together with Will Huygen, he made two very popular gnome books. In short: come to ‘t Veluws Zandsculpturenfestijn and step into the wonderful world of Rien Poortvliet.
