Where neighbour De Berencamp declined, Salentein actually flourished. Once a 16th-century homestead called Groot Vaneveld, it grew in the 18th and 19th centuries into a magnificent country estate, renamed Salentein.
In 1906, it gained its current grandeur thanks to Willem Marcus van Weede, lord of Salentein and De Berencamp. Salentein was converted into a house in a pseudo-medieval style, complete with battlements and corner towers, while elements of De Berencamp were integrated into the larger whole.
However, the origin of the name remains a mystery, perhaps referring to stones, a hall or house, sale, but the exact meaning remains unknown.
