St. Nicholas Church dates from the 15th century and was built on the foundations of an older church. The building is dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and children, among others.
In 1923, a major fire struck the church; only the walls remained standing. The well-known and striking onion-shaped spire from 1631 was also lost in the process. A slightly less slender copy took its place and is today the beacon of Dwingeloo.
