In Vierlingsbeek stands a stone church with a free-standing tower, also called campanile. Since the year 1000, a stone church has stood in the village, named after Saint Laurentius. In 1944, this church was unfortunately completely destroyed.
The fact that the church was dedicated to Laurentius suggests that the village might already have had a church in the seventh century, as many old Laurentius churches date from that period.
Besides being a beautiful sight, it is also part of the legend of Het Duvelsklökske from Sambeek.
The priest from this story, which takes place in the 15th century, had arranged beautiful new church bells for the Saint John’s tower in Sambeek. On a harsh Christmas night, the small bell was swallowed by the devil and disappeared.
In his search for the small bell, he arrives at the church in Vierlingsbeek. The sound of the church bells had led him there in the hope that the Duvelsklökske might be among them. To his disappointment, it wasn’t. The pastor of the Laurentius Church asked him: "You Catholics always consecrate your bells, right? Are you sure you also consecrated the Duvelsklökske?"
