Rope maker Steenbergen is a family business that has been around since 1900. It was started by the great-grandfather of Albert Steenbergen jr, the current owner, who took over the business from a rope maker in Genemuiden (Gebr. Vos). After several moves, the company has now found its home in Gorssel, where Gerrit Steenbergen - Albert jr.'s father - contributed to the company's growth. Today, Rope maker Steenbergen is run by Albert jr., who ambitiously builds on this craft.
Various natural materials such as hemp and flax are used to make hand-beaten ropes. In addition, Rope maker Steenbergen also supplies machine beaten ropes for all kinds of different applications. All products can be finished according to specific customer wishes with, for example, rings, rope stockings or other accessories placed directly into the rope for extra strength or aesthetic value.
Curious about how the rope craftsmen carry out their work? If work permits, for a small fee you can watch how this old craft is carried out. In the small museum, you can see machines, tools and products made of rope from four generations of rope makers. You can also book a guided tour (by appointment).
