In 1394 Jan van Renesse acquired castle Rhijnauwen from his wife Aleydt van Lichtenberg. The Van Lichtenbergs were a powerful Utrecht family who regularly had a problem with other Utrecht families. The Van Renesse family were also drawn into this struggle, with the result that they were banished from the city and Rhijnauwen Castle was set on fire. After 1450, a new house was built, parts of which can be recognized in the current country house. Note the different type of brick! The present classicist mansion dates from the early eighteenth century. With Oud- en Nieuw-Amelisweerd Rhijnauwen forms a country estate zone on the outskirts of Utrecht.
