In the heavy fog of 10 April 1945, ten prisoners from Groningen were shot and buried in cold blood, on the Nije Drintse Wei between Bakkeveen and Allardsoog. Due to the dense fog, local residents only discovered a day later what horrific events had taken place just outside their village. Only five days after this sad event, the region was liberated by the Canadians and the eight-metre-long grave could be opened.
The victims, all resistance fighters, were later reburied in their own village. On 10 April 1952, a monument was unveiled at this spot in memory of the 10 victims. The memorial stone is a large boulder on a brick base of small boulders. On the stone you will find the names of all ten fallen soldiers.
